Friends of Dorothy Podcast show

A Journey to Queertopia Step back in time 40 years ago to a sitcom that puts the 'Queer' well and truly into Queertopia! 'Mikey' and 'Steph' want to create a safe haven for their own 'kind' but get more than they bargained for, when they advertise for an 'alternative' flatmate. Their mission: An All 'Friends of Dorothy' household. Series 1 has 12 episodes

Meet The Writer/Director

After a successful career with ABC TV as a Producer and Director in Comedy, Infotainment and Live News programs, David returned to the LGBT community where he worked as a Phone and Web Counsellor; illuminating what it was like to be queer in ever changing times. Continuing his desire to write and direct, two feature length scripts were workshopped, before the idea to bring to life ‘Friends Of Dorothy’ was seeded. This sitcom series combines David’s love of storytelling with his experience of and advocacy for his ‘tribe’. With inspirations as diverse and colourful as ‘The Golden Girls’, ‘The Two Ronnies’; the works of Neil Simon and Mel Brooks, and camp icons such as Streisand, Midler and Minnelli and The Golden Years Of Hollywood, David also sought to mine his own rite of passage from the mid 1980’s when he came out as gay and navigated a bumpy road into adulthood.

Recorded in 2024 in a Melbourne studio, ’Friends Of Dorothy’ has a 12 episode arc, which amusingly depicts the mission of a pair of childhood buddies to create a ‘Queertopia’ in the form of their shared house. Set in 1984, the episodes both provide a snapshot of the times, and have resonance forty years on, in an age of cancel culture, gender politics and social media saturation where debates are robust and controversial.
