about Music Sundowner Programme 41 – The Trumpet Sings

The trumpet is often associated with brilliance, ceremony and virtuosity, but it has a much wider expressive voice. In this programme we move away from the concerto to discover the instrument in more intimate and varied settings. Dazzling technical display gives way to lyricism, tenderness, reflection and humour, while different accompaniments reveal changing colours in the trumpet’s sound.

We also meet two close relatives: the mellower cornet and the warm, rounded flugelhorn. From Arban’s spectacular Carnival of Venice to Anderson’s gentle A Trumpeter’s Lullaby and Hovhaness’s contemplative Prayer of Saint Gregory, the trumpet continually changes character. Peaslee’s Nightsongs allows us to hear the contrasting colours of trumpet and flugelhorn, while Chet Baker takes us into the intimate world of jazz and improvisation.
The Trumpet Sings invites us to listen beyond the instrument’s brilliance and discover just how expressive, versatile and personal its voice can be.
