Programme 121 – The Tuba Moves from the Back Row to Centre Stage

Usually heard providing a powerful foundation from the back of the orchestra, the tuba rarely gets the chance to stand in the spotlight.

In this programme, that changes.

Discover an instrument capable of far more than weight and depth.
The tuba can sing with warmth, move with astonishing agility, and even display a surprising sense of humour.

Three very different concertos by Vaughan Williams, Alexander Arutiunian and John Williams reveal its remarkable range of colour and character.
Then the orchestra disappears altogether.

For our final work, one tuba becomes four, as John Stevens explores what happens when these great bass instruments make music entirely on their own.
From lyrical melodies to dazzling virtuosity, there may be a few surprises along the way.
Join Brian as the tuba moves from the back row to centre stage. Ralph Vaughan Williams – Concerto for Bass Tuba in F minor Øystein Baadsvik, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Anne Manson in F Minor_ I.
